MANOEUVRES

This is a step by step guide on how to do each manoeuvre as instructed during my lessons. I have written them down as bullet points, which should provide a revision guide after you have completed each one during a practical lesson.

…………………………………………………………………………

TURN IN THE ROAD

1. Park up on the left.

2. Select first gear. Six point check.

3. Steer quickly all the way to the right, whilst moving slowly- Only use clutch to move NO accelerator. SLOW CAR / QUICK HANDS

4. STOP when bottom of the driver’s door mirror appears to be above the kerb.

5. Move slowly forward steering quickly at least once back to the left and STOP when mirror moves further above kerb.

6. Handbrake on and select reverse. Six point check

7. Reverse slowly, steering quickly full lock to the Left. All round observation, especially over the right shoulder.

8. Stop when kerb touches yellow dot on the rear right door inside car.

9. Moving slowly back once more steering quickly to right. Stop when kerb disappears behind seatbelt pillar.

10. Apply handbrake, select first gear, six point check.

11. Drive slowly forward, keep observing, avoid kerb on the other side of the road.

12. If required, reverse back again to avoid touching kerb.

WATCH OUT ALL THE TIME FOR APPROACHING VEHICLES / PEDESTRIANS. STOP IF THEY GET TOO CLOSE, MAKE EYE CONTACT AND ASSESS WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO. MOVE ONLY WHEN YOU ARE HAPPY IT IS SAFE TO DO SO

…………………………………………………………………………

LEFT REVERSE

1. Pull up in safe place before the junction on left

2. Select first gear, six point check. Signal if necessary.

3. Drive forward, stop two car lengths past the corner parallel to kerb. Signal if necessary.

4. Select reverse, six point check.

5. If safe reverse slowly, parallel with the kerb. All round observations as you move, especially over left shoulder. Use left door mirror sparingly

5. STOP when tyre appears to be level with start of corner in small round mirror

6. Six point check, especially over right shoulder for any oncoming hazards.

7. When safe move slowly and steer quickly full lock to the left, (ONE AND A QUARTER TIMES) whilst moving slowly, keep pausing and looking around for vehicles / pedestrians. SLOW CAR / QUICK HANDS

8. STOP when door handle appears to be near kerb, then straighten steering wheel one and a quarter times to the right.

9. Apply any correction to get closer or further from kerb, depending on position.

10. Continue to reverse slowly, whilst observing all around. Stop approx 3-4 car lengths from junction. Car should be parallel and no more than 12 inches (30cm) from kerb.

11. If required, drive forward, and reverse back into required position.

12. Hand break on and select neutral.

PARALLEL PARKING

1. Drive slowly alongside the car that you want to reverse around. Leave approx a 1mtr gap ( If any cars behind put left indicator on )

2. STOP when left wing mirror is past the end of the car.

3. 6 point check

4. Reverse with wheel straight, whilst looking over left shoulder and glancing in mirror.

5. STOP when left wing mirror is near the front (or back ) tyre of the target car. Use front or rear door line as a guide

6. 6 point check, especially over right shoulder

7. Reverse slowly, steering quickly to the left. Stop when car is at approx 45 degrees (or 2 o’clock )

8. 6 point check. While moving slowly, steer all the way to the right. This must be judged by watching the small left hand mirror to assess where the kerb is in relation to the back tyre. Do not hit the kerb. Adjust as necessary.

9. When car is parallel, steer 1 ¼ turns to the left. Car should be reasonably close to the kerb.

10. Reverse until you can see tyres and tarmac.

11. If required, move forward and back, while observing, until car is in desired position.

12. Secure car, select neutral.

13. When moving off, remember to signal.

  • TESTIMONIALS

'I cannot recommend John Scott more highly. He is highly skilled, knowledgeable and has brilliant observational abilities. What I particularly appreciated was John's calm, factual approach to learning to drive and to keeping improving.  I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I want to praise John's openness and willingness to take on several challenges which I presented as a student. I have been profoundly deaf since early adulthood so could not listen to instructions while driving; I also chose to drive only automatic cars - which meant using my own car for the lessons. With extreme patience and a positive constructive approach to the lessons, I found myself gaining in confidence - far more than I ever expected to.

I cannot recommend John more highly. You will be in very safe and professional hands if you opt to learn with him. If I can do it, so can you!'

    Test pass

I would recommend John to anyone and everyone. He is patient, consistent and works quickly and efficiently -always on time and very flexible with lessons. My lessons were an absolute joy - having had a couple of previous instructors I haven't always enjoyed driving lessons like I did with John. I can't thank JDS enough for helping me to pass with a handful of minors! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
